Ride Report

Brecon Beacons - Tregoyd Oct 11th 09

Ride report for Tregoyd Pleasure ride 11th Oct.

This was as I understand it the first time the organisers had put this ride
on and in my estimation was a complete success.

The weather unfortunately was against us, VERY VERY wet, but then again this
is Wales! And considering the weather there was a good turn out. Food, loo's
and a friendly welcome, what more can you ask?

The route was generally well marked, but as with any ride there was some
confusion at places, so if I have to criticise then I would have put a few
more 'confidence' markers out to reassure riders that they were actually
going the correct way.

The terrain was challenging and a good test of both rider and horse. We had
booked for the 22 miles, but this had to be cut short due to the weather
conditions, so we ended up doing 15 miles, though I was actually glad and
would have chosen that option given the terrain. The ride was mostly off
road, lovely rolling hills and long canters. There were a few gates, some
not that horse friendly but by the time we had finished we were getting good
at them.

I'm afraid Mach and I had a bit of a tumble, he lost his footing whilst
walking and fell on me crushing my foot in the stirrup cage when we were
about 3 miles from home.

We had a thoroughly fabulous time, despite our unfortunate spill and were
able to finish the ride without further incident. Mach got away with some
bruises but his girth saved him from too much trauma, and I ended up with
broken toes but all fixed now. However, I won't be wearing toe cages
anymore!

A big thank you to the organisers and I would recommend this ride to anyone,
well worth the trip if you are travelling far, but..... make sure you're
fit!

All the best

Thank you for your constructive report and very sorry about your midhap. The ride was awash with markers as I know what a pain bad marking is so they must have been removed. Mike, on his de-marking, said some stakes were missing and, when I came to a certain part, there were no markers but I'm pretty sure I saw one on another track. I won't be using this area again as the mountains have a tendancy attract the mist and rain. When Mike was de-marking some walkers appear out of the mist, map in hand, and asked where they were! The weather wasn't bad a few miles away!
